“My job is to get you to quit seeing me.”
It's a terrible business model, but I can't do this any other way.
I've Been Where You Are
In 2003, a hit-and-run driver sent my car flipping across three lanes of a Los Angeles freeway. Miraculously, I walked away with a little road rash and whiplash. Then came seven to ten panic attacks a day.
After three sessions with a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, they stopped entirely, never to return. Two weeks later, I began training to become one. In the 20-plus years since, 26 of my clients have become practitioners too.
Talk therapy works on the story. Somatic Experiencing works on the physiology underneath it.
You've read the books and done the therapy, the retreats, the mindset work. You can explain your history in detail. And the same old patterns keep running the show.
That's not a lack of willpower or insight. Beliefs always win, and the oldest ones aren't stored in your thinking. They're held in your physiology. Trauma and shame are physiological conditions more than psychological disorders, so understanding them isn't the same as resolving them.
“I read every self-help book I could get my hands on, except for that one on self-sabotage. I never finished it.”
Brian D. Mahan, SEP, I Cried All the Way to Happy Hour
“It's not easy or lazy work, but well worth it... especially if you've tried other types of therapy and haven't found real change.”
Leela R., client
The Trifecta Behind Your Patterns
Three kinds of wounds shape who you become, how you relate, and how you respond under stress.
Shock trauma
Too much, all at once.
The accident, the loss, the medical procedure, the assault.
Developmental trauma
Not enough, over time.
Growing up without enough safety, attunement, or care.
The trauma of shame
Often the original wound.
And the toughest to unwind.
They're powerful. They're not permanent.
The Mahan Map™
Rewire how you think, feel, speak, and behave.
Every person is a fingerprint. Your history, your defenses, and the ways you learned to cope are yours alone. So there's no formula here. There's a map, recognized in hindsight after more than 20 years of watching Somatic Experiencing transform person after person.
Old limiting beliefs, forged in shock trauma, developmental trauma, and the trauma of shame, run on autopilot until they feel like personality. The Mahan Map follows your symptoms back to their source, lets what got stuck finish, and gives your nervous system time to reorganize, so present-day truths can take over the autopilot.
“Notably, he does not present himself as a guru or master with a one-size-fits-all recipe for growth and success.”
Jonathan D. Salk, M.D., Psychiatrist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine

Quick Answers
Who is Brian D. Mahan, SEP?
Brian D. Mahan, SEP, is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner with more than 20 years of experience, author of I Cried All the Way to Happy Hour, and creator of The Mahan Map™. He treats developmental trauma, shock trauma, and the trauma of shame as physiological conditions more than psychological disorders, working physiologically and relationally to clear the old limiting beliefs that run on autopilot so people can return to their authentic selves. About Brian
What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) is a body-based approach to healing trauma and stress, developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine. Rather than focusing only on the story, it works with the nervous system, helping survival responses that got stuck during overwhelming experiences finish and settle. Brian D. Mahan, SEP, is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and a certified Healing Shame Practitioner (Lyon/Rubin Method).
What is The Mahan Map™?
The Mahan Map™ is the approach Brian D. Mahan, SEP, developed over more than 20 years of Somatic Experiencing work. It treats old limiting beliefs, forged in shock trauma, developmental trauma, and the trauma of shame, as the hidden driver of how people think, feel, speak, and behave, and works physiologically and relationally so new beliefs and patterns can run on autopilot. It is a map, not a formula: every person is a fingerprint.
How is Somatic Experiencing different from talk therapy?
Talk therapy works mainly with thoughts and the story. Somatic Experiencing works with the physiology underneath them, the reactions that fire before you have time to think. Many of Brian's clients come to him after years of talk therapy that brought insight but not change. Brian isn't a talk therapist, and that's the point.
How do you heal shame?
Shame isn't only a feeling or a belief. It's a physiological state: the collapse, the heat in your face, the urge to disappear. That's why insight alone rarely reaches it. Shame is a relational wound, and it heals in relationship, which is where Brian helps toxic shame transform into healthy shame.
Does Somatic Experiencing work over Zoom?
Yes. Brian has worked with clients remotely since the early 2000s, first on Skype and now on Zoom, with clients around the world. Because the work tracks your nervous system in real time, it adapts well to video. Many clients find it easier to settle in their own space. How sessions work
